CHENG Chin-man

Cheng Chin Man is presently an artist in residence of The Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) in Hong Kong. He is fascinated by both visual art and music. His works include painting, installation and contemporary music.

He studied Sound Design and Music Recording at The Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts and graduated in 2000. In the same year he was awarded "Best Student Music Composer" and "Best Student Sound Designer" for theatre production by the academy. He then began to focus on composing and was self-taught. From 2002 to 2004 he was funded by The British Council Chevening Postgraduate Scholarships for his Masters Degree in Composition (Mus.M in Composition) at The University of Manchester. He studied composition with Professor Philip Grange, and electro-acoustic composition with Dr. David Berezan.

His electro-acoustic composition “Amalgamation” (2004) was featured and also his composer webpage was launched by Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music (US) in 2011. His “Piano Suite No.88.1-11” (2007-2011) was premiered in Hong Kong in 2012 by Jeremy Young, and is released on CD by The Hong Kong Composers’ Guild in 2013. The piano suite consists of 11 piano pieces of different styles. Each piece consists of only the 88 different pitches available on the piano, and each of those 88 pitches appear only once. It is believed that this is the first time in music history that this concept has been applied. Cheng Chin Man has developed certain unique musical concepts in his output. His inspiration draws from the duality between tradition and contemporary, naivety and sophistication, intimacy and distance.
